I've seen a few posts that are rather inappropriate and offensive responses to the recent flooding in Texas. Such responses lack sensitivity and empathy for the victims of the floods, with a licensed doctor saying things like "May all visitors, children, non-MAGA voters and pets be safe and dry," "Kerr County MAGA voted to gut FEMA. They deny climate change," and "May they get what they voted for. Bless their hearts."

What about here? Does anyone here find some fault with Trump or the Trump administration for the flooding (or response to said flooding)?

In a general sense Trump supports a style of politics which makes climate disasters more likely while also reducing funding to the agencies which would help respond to such events.

For any given event you can't really say if his actions made a difference though, it is all in aggregate. It is fair to hit him on it though IMO

There are numerous cuts that have happened under Trump which will weaken forecasting and early warning systems for these types of tragedies, and will cause more victims over the coming years. That much is indisputable.

In this particular case, it is possible that those cuts played a role. The bigger issue is the local government knowing dangerous floods were inevitable in this area and choosing not to install early warning systems to save money.

Honestly I think all the discourse around this is giving HUGE "let's not make the school shootings political" energy.

Of COURSE Trump and the Trump administration are responsible for this. OF COURSE we should be calling it out. Those children certainly didn't *deserve to die,* but the parents who voted for Trump killed those kids as surely as if they'd performed a school shooting themselves. They certainly deserve the blame for it as much as Trump does. And clutching pearls over this is just obscuring the fact that these deaths ARE political, like it or not.

There's a lot of blame to go around here. It starts with the founding of a city on a historic flood plain and ends with Trump gutting the NWS, preventing whatever small chance there was to predict this tragedy ahead of time. There decades of conservative stupidity that lead to this, not just 4.5 years of trump as president.

Edit: additionally, while I agree the negative response can be disgusting, let's not try to pretend the responses would be any better if this was a disaster that happened in a blue state. Laura Loomer has Trump's ear and joked about the genocide of 65m Hispanic people that live in the US. People are crude because that's how the right chose to play the game. If you want to terrify yourself read The Fifth Risk by Michael Lewis which goes over all the cuts Trump made in his first term to essential government services. This has been massively accelerated under his second term. There is so much that just happens that people take for granted, but we are starting to see what it is like when it doesn't just happen. 

Unfortunately you are going to see a lot more examples of it and a lot more people are going to die.

All I can say is that the National Weather Service forecasted the event and stated that there would be significant, if not dangerous, amounts of rain, not a lot of people didn't give a shit, in typical fashion.

I'd argue that if we must blame a unit of government, then it would be on the state and local levels to not coordinate and create a system to provide emergency warnings when needed. Camp Mystic should be done for, as there will be a pretty easy argument for negligence, seeing as they had warnings of significant rainfall and still let campers sleep in a floodplain, but I have read that it has some pretty wealthy benefactors, so it will probably survive, unlike many of the children they were responsible for.

I'm sure the issues with the NWS did not help, but I don't know where blame really lies yet. I imagine the reporting on that is going to take some time, but there will be good deep dives into the situation and probably a very depressing documentary.

Will conservatives accept the answer if the cuts do bear significant responsibility? No. So I don't care. It won't lead to accountability even if it is their fault.

Republicans have also defunded FEMA.

While deaths from Trump’s cuts to the NWS are only a matter of when, it seems like in this case the blame should land on local governance who did not install an alarm system, as an alarm was broadcast to adjoining counties.

But yeah, living in Florida is pretty scary right now because we are no longer able to properly monitor for hurricanes.

I do put a significant amount of blame on the kind of political outlook of Americans that both elected Trump *and* refused to invest in infrastructure to protect life from tragedy. These are the people who think they will always be protected from bad stuff. Even if bad stuff happens, it's someone else's fault. If you take funding from services meant to help people, disasters like this are made worse. I don’t know what else to say to conservatives that are so adamant about gutting vital government services and instilling a culture of ignorance to anything federal that they are willing  to compromise the safety of their loved ones and neighbors. 90+ people are dead. I would highlight that includes children but the party of family values doesn’t really give a fuck about dead kids. 

While I don’t directly blame Trump, those cuts are going to make disasters like that so much worse. They’re definitely going to make recovery from said events that much more worse. They act as a force multiplier making things that much more difficult. 

The direct  blame should go to local governance for continuing to allow that camp to operate on a flood zone and not investing in the warning system. From what I read their officials said it was too expensive. I hope the savings was worth it.

So, what they (the left) should do (politically) is two things…

(1) Blame the **local county** officials loud and often since it is ultimately their fault. Maybe they get voted out.

(2) Instead of **directly blaming** the Trump administration for **this** tragedy, instead, create a message that is of the lines of _“You see that disaster that happened in Texas? Trump’s recent cuts to NOAA (and others like it) may make these disasters a more common occurrence in the future”_
It’s not as emotionally energizing as “Trump cuts killed children in a summer camp” but it will hold up much stronger to scrutiny since it’s strictly **future** speculation and not cause-and-effect post mortem.

As for Trump himself, he absolutely has done more then just about anyone to create an anti-science, anti-expert culture which may have had a part in people simply dismissing the warning or not taking them seriously enough, especially in a state such as Texas. This sort of culture he has spread may have been part of the reason the local government decided to not spend on an early warning system.

I resist speculating on these things until all or at least most of the details of the entire incident come out. I have always hated to see tragic events immediately get politicized. Yes tragic events do bring up important political conversations but I don’t find it appropriate in the immediate aftermath. Yes the republicans are just as guilty of this.
